The Problem:
The strain on the caregiver or family members, coupled with the health risk involved due to the missed or over dosage of medicine, is a concern for most families. In order to create more independence and privacy to persons who are elderly or cognitively impaired, a device for dispensing pills at a set time needs to be developed.
Background:
Everyone has mild memory lapses form time to time. But as people begin to age this problem become more pronounced. In America, the number of people 65 and older is larger than ever before. And as the baby boom generation enters its senior years, between 2010 and 2030, it is projected that one in five Americans will be over 65. With this older population, there are a lot of health concerns that need to be addressed. The consumption of pills to tackle health problems will most likely continue to increase. The time of taking the pill is important, as recovery is dependent on the accuracy of taking medication. The burden of making sure that a family member who suffers from short term memory takes their medication on time can sometimes fall on a caregiver or someone in the family. In order to solve this problem, our product will remind the user that they need to take their medication while also dispensing the correct number of pills needed. This alarm can be set by the caregiver and would not require much maintenance besides replacing the hopper with more pills.
