What is a prosthetic?
A prosthetic is an artificial substitute (replacement) for a part of the human body. It may be an internal replacement, such as an artificial joint, or an external replacement such as an artificial limb.
About the project
Ten million people in India suffer from some loco-motor disability. Jaipur Foot Organization provides free quality prosthetic limbs to impoverished people located in India. Currently, they only provide above and below knee prosthetic feet. Ideally, the parts should be simple and mostly off the shelf items to reduce the cost of production. If the parts cannot be bought off the shelf, then they must be designed such that the manufacturing processes will be as cheap as possible. Otherwise there will be less distribution than is required.
Jaipur Foot Organization proposed a project to the MMAE-432 class to build an alpha prototype of a below elbow prosthesis for under $30 USD, or an above elbow prosthesis for under $60 USD. Two teams worked in tandem with professionals in the field in order to create a fiscally responsible, easily manufactured, fully operational prosthetic hand.
